Snake's Bride

Oh, that is not dust creeping along the forest road.
Oh, do not get into trouble, do not touch, girl.
Do not awaken the magic
Turn around, do not look –
He-snakes are marrying she-snakes

You did not deal with the evil
You did not hide your eyes from trouble.
You are ours, girl - it is your own fault!
There is fog over the glade –
The snake tsar is waiting there
You are betrothed to him...

«Обернуться бы лентой в чужих волосах!
Плыть к тебе до рассвета, не ведая страх,
Шелком в руки родные опуститься легко –
Вспоминай мое имя...
Ветер, брат ты мой, ветер, за что осерчал?
Хороню в себе боль и венчаю печаль.
Бурунами морскими пробежать нелегко –
Вспоминай мое имя, прикасайся рукой...»

Princess

I sang about the gods and sang about heroes
About the clang of blades and bloody battles.
As long as my falcon was with me
His squawk took the place of prayer for me

But it is now a year since he flew away -
A magical snowstorm took him away.
A dear friend spirited away by a blizzard
That came from distant lands

And I have not been myself since that day
And seagulls crying, crying in the sky.
In the fog my gaze will discern
Just gentian coloured eyes

Oh, would that I could see with a falcon's eyes
In the air on falcon's wings
In that foreign falcon land
And not in a dream but somewhere like it...

Become my soul, bird
Give me wind for a time in my wings.
Every night I dream of flying -
Cold fjords, mile after mile

Your sleeves are silk, princess
The mountains embroidered with white heather.
I know that I was never there
And if I was the one on the mountain…

I would remember that it happened
Without you and without me.
I am tumbling like a fallen leaf
And my soul is not peaceful

You pay for a song with the full moon
The way others pay with hard cash.
In a distant land, shrouded by winter
You are more beautiful than spring
and more intoxicating than summer...

She only said, «My life is dreary,
He cometh not», she said;
She said, «I am aweary, aweary,
I would that I were dead!»
